A question
Here's a question for all you engineers out there. How do you derive the conservation of energy? I know the answer already... do you? | | Thursday, December 8th, 2005 | | 3:08 am |
Inflections from tonight with Ovgum.. god so many, I can't even remember, but they seemed like things to live by Well here's one of my own 1. Try to break through your paradigm. As we get older we get trained into each our own little paradigms, and they become loops that we become trapped in. To go out and do creative and innovative things and perhaps even acheive something we need to break through and do things different. 2. You meet people sometimes and have great conversational experiences with them, and them never see them again..... but these can change you.... hmm I need to dwell more on this thought. 3. Write a book about a pair of sunglasses that have been passed from one person to another across the world. These pair of sunglasses have their own personality. 4. There are people in the world who have nothing, yet we run around with a lot of things and get depressed, and search to find ourselves... while they're dying. Okay, well good, lets do this, lets find ourselves. Because once you find yourself, you get direction and are able to acheive things with this conviction and then go out and acheive things that those people don't have a chance to, and make change. And if you can help them in the process! 5. Go on impulse once in a while.... because when you have impulses, they're often the feelings that guide your life. For instance you if have an impulse to climb a hill, just to see whats at the top, than do it, if you have an impulse to create an idea in your head, than do it. I love people like Ovgum, because they can go places with ideas and make them into greater ideas, and this is what enlightens us all. | | Wednesday, December 7th, 2005 | | 12:05 pm |
Awesome simulation of a galaxy collision... this expands your mind, if you really sit and thing about the massive scale of such an event. Shows that we're part of the larger universe. http://burro.astr.cwru.edu/SSAnims/GAP5.mpg | | Tuesday, December 6th, 2005 | | 1:06 am |
I've been pretty depressed lately... seems like everyone is so cold. I never feel accepted anywhere... I mean, yeah I sort of get accepted, but it never feels genuine, and that's what gives me the impression that people are cold. I mean I know I'm a little akward on the surface, but nobody takes the time to get to know me... I have dreams, and inspiration and such, but what is it without the comfort of other people. What's one supposed to do when his peers actively reject him... Again, it's no surprise that the suicide rate of single males is higher than other groups... it's tough to carry on like this.. I hope things change, I hope people aren't really like this. But I fear they are..... :( Current Mood: sad | | Monday, December 5th, 2005 | | 5:07 pm |

Entrepenurial Plans...
Startup Strategy. I already know why I want to start my own business. I like working for myself, and I like the concept of developing innovative ideas while working for myself. I want to start businesses, earn experience and money, and eventually launch into a space business. But somehow, this dream suffered this semester. Who knows why, but I've wasted enough time and need to start laying out my strategy... here's how I'm going to do it. 1. Collect and Store Information - Read about who and what have been successful and why, and take active notes, and store them in an organized fashion. 2. Write down my ideas and develop them. - I've had some ideas along the way, I just haven't recorded them, and haven't gone into much more detail on any of them. Some ideas will work, some won't, and some have higher profit potential than others. Regardless I need to actively investigate the market forces that currently guide or would guide the ideas I have, and look at who's been successful in that type of industry. As I compile that information, keep vigilant about thinking about the information and compiling it into solid plans. 3. Search for more ideas - Keep on the lookout for ideas in general, whenever there is a good one... write it the fuck down, and investigate using the process in number 3. Be on active lookout for professional conferences, little entrepeneur club meeting, and the like, and go to the worthy ones. List all of the ideas and opportunities I find from those, and investigate them... see if they are worthy of my time. 4. Get organized - I'm terribly, awfully disorganized. This leads to a serious impedence. I need to develop a strategy for being organized, and stick to it, even if I run into points of being uninspired. 5. Hook up with other people and think out ideas There are people out there who also want to start up there own business. There are people out there who have excellent ideas but just have not put much time into developing them. There are people out there..... Compile all the people I know who I think might just be into this type of thing, and get them talking all in one place. See where it goes.... 6. Be able to carry through, even when inspiration gets low, or someone gives discouraging words keep plugging away. This may in fact be the hardest part (next to getting organized) 7. Don't get involved in too much, only the stuff that's worth it. 8. Plan out an actual execution date for all of this... don't let it just be another idea that goes nowhere. Start things in the order of.. 1. Get organized 2. Collect and store information 3, 3 & 3 3. Write down and investigate my ideas 3. Make a plan for hooking up with other smart or inspired souls 3. Search out ideas (look for conferences and events to go to!) I have time over christmas break, I'll have to begin this process and try and make it count, I've left too many things in the dust, don't want to leave this in the dust, because I think that if I can successfully pull of working for myself, I'll be happy. Because I like working for myself, I've done it a lot here, and it's simply awesome, and then I can put my efforts into space. I'm going to have to find a way to not let my career kill these aspirations, I have a feeling that wherever I work, they're going to work me like a fucking dog, and I need to regulate that.. Updates to come (Including the reports of temporary depression like the last entry) Mike Current Mood: accomplished | | Friday, December 2nd, 2005 | | 7:38 pm |
I'm sad :(, my whole life people just haven't liked me, haven't given me a chance to express.... I mean I'm fucking odd or boring or whatever on the surface I know, but I'm just really really shy.... but people discard me before I break out of that mode.. especially women. Do you know how crushing that is, when so many of the people you know in your life do that to you. When they don't take enough time to see through that layer. When you want love, but you're too nervous to ever make it work.. Kinda makes you bitter after a while.. I mean people think that they're good people, but yet they disregard me and cause a lot of pain.. I tell you, you all don't look like good people to me, you look like fucking hippocrits.. | | Saturday, November 19th, 2005 | | 8:13 am |

Cash-in on the horizon
Okay, well for those of us who want money to do make all the great changes we want in life, and for those who want money because they're vein... point your eyes towards China. China in an economic sense keeps growing and growing and growing, and all of it's markets are starting to boom. So some of us Americans, those of us who know the trades of finance, business, and/or technology may have the chance to become quite wealthy off of this. I don't know how exactly that one would do this, but I intend to at least look into it. Aerospace engineering it seems afterall is too stagnant a market for me. I've already resolved to go into the entrepenurial markets and make changes in space via that mechanism... I'd hate to waste my potential as some sort of generic "systems engineer" in the aerospace field.... However, to do something on my own is going to be hard... I need to get hooked up with a company and people who work with technology, so that I can partner my skills with theirs yes... I gotta keep vigilant... in these steps 1. Continously write down my ideas 2. Go to all sorts of events and look for opportunities that may lead down a path to developing marketable technologies 3. Critically evaluate efforts and be vigilant about maintaing my presence in the ones I have observed to be high potential Honestly, I don't know if this is all going to work, I'd say that I've got a pretty good chance of falling on my face.... but still, I think I have a fighting chance to make it. | | Saturday, November 12th, 2005 | | 5:20 pm |
Wisdom I've picked up from the SEDS conference, who I've learned them from, and what my inflections are on them. Friday Jeff Feige - When you're coordinating a team effort, something that can help you succeed is knowing what the thoughts of everyone on your team are about each other, you, and the important aspects of the project. My thoughts: Since I've not done this, I'm not sure what the effect of doing this would be... I suppose I'll have to experiment with it. I think that there are certain things you can do that will make people give you that type of information.... I'm busy now, but I will definetly brainstorm on this later. Jeff Feige - At student conferences such as this, people will spill a lot of information that they otherwise wouldn't, so we're getting a unique package of information that none other would get. Why do they do this? Because we're students and we don't have the motives to try and use that information against them. On the contrary, we'll use it to prime our engineering prowess and interests that the companies that these speakers operate in... which will be useful to them when they hire us. My thoughts: This can be generalized somewhat to other situations. There will be places where people will spill a lot more sensitive information than any other place... if you need this information, go to these places and situations. And don't be EVIL! George Whitsides - When you're our age - 15 - 35, you will have the chance to spend your time and energy accomplishing a lot of things. There will be a lot of different opportunities out there for you to make these sort of accomplishments, but you only get one pass at it. So create a network, and talk to this network, and make sure that you use this network to gain the information on all the many different opportunities. Use this information to make up your mind on which ones are most worth your time. Some guy - Big business knows how to do business, if you're in a small business you may have a great idea which really in fact has the potential to make a lot of money, but be wary that you may not know how to do busines effectively Bob Richards - Not everybody is an entrepenuer. Bob Richards - I think he said something else, I'll have to try and think hard what it was, because it was good. Me - God damnit, I need to write things down more often... Me - There were two very beautiful ladies, from washington tonight, I hope to talk to them a teeny bit more. | | Thursday, November 10th, 2005 | | 9:54 pm |
Beautiful Line from a song "I'd drain all the blood in my veins for just one more conversation with you..." It's true, when you've found someone like that in your life, a deep part of your life becomes intertwined with them... and to lose someone like that, well, those are the times when you know the realities of this universe are sometimes so harsh. Deep sympathies to all that have lost.. | | Friday, November 4th, 2005 | | 10:05 pm |
This Journal will likely have to go soon. In the next five years I am planning to start my own company... and that will no doubt come with many legal mumbo jumbo. And a livejournal, you can bet they'd use something like that against you in court. This system of ours does not treat people who express their true inner thoughts and feelings very well. You must appear to be only the strong, ambitious, and presentable fraction of yourself. And why, because people are selfish and will use it against you to make their own gain. Unfortunately in this information age it's possible to know a great many things about someone with only a moderate amount of effort. If you've ever talked to a CIA employee or a computer security expert, you'll quickly realize that they already know way too much about you, and are often sharing your information with little regard for your thoughts on the matter. This is the issue we face in a society with increasingly accellerating technology. We're creating it at a rate unparalleled by any other time in history and our society needs to constantly adapt to it. We need to be responsible in the way we implement our new technologies... if we do so with only ourselves and our greedy intentions in mind, then we are headed for a troubled future. And unfortunately we can't change everybody, so it's up to each of us individually to act responsesibally and encourage others around us to do so as well. We can only hope that power-hungry, greedy, and selfish people of the world do not win out. Be good, keep your environment and your fellow human being in mind at all times. | | 9:37 pm |
I owned my fucking computational methods class... 5th highest grade out of 50 people. That's pretty unusual for me, I'm usually the dumb kid scoring just below average. There are 2 reasons why I got this grade that I did. 1. When I have time to study as much as I should... I look over all the material and try to understand all the material from the foundation up. I learn all of the theoretical foundations behind things, and then go through all of the computations correctly. A lot of kids at these big 4-year universities will just try and learn only what they need to get a grade, nuts to that theory stuff.. 2. I used to program a lot when I was a kid. When I was younger, one of the things I considered for my grown up life was computer programming. Thus I still like the stuff and have a feel for it. That's all, just wanted to brag a bit. | | Thursday, November 3rd, 2005 | | 6:15 pm |
Again, I'm finding this a very helpful tool to keep my to-do list thoughts accessible wherever I am. So here goes Applied at accudyne today... they seem like a great company to work for. They work with tons of fabrication machines to help companies improve their product development and manufacturing operations. I've sent them a request for info. Hopefully I'll hear back. Polymer talk
I'm getting into the habit of posting all the things I need on the journal here... because they stay here and don't elude me when I'm searching for them. Hats off to gina miller for this one! Hey Gina.. I know you're probably busy again, but do you have time to answer a question about plastic molding? I saw a raccoon! I think that was the second (or maybe third) one I've ever seen! Nifty! 5:15 PM yea.. I can try. What is your question? What do you do as far as polymer molding, I remember you telling me about how you mold silicon rubber are you trying to make a mold out of a polymer? or do you want to mold a polymer? 5:20 PM Mold a polymer mainly I'll probably have to do it for something I'm working on I just have no idea how to get access to injection molding or blow molding machinery I mean, the people I'm working with could pay for it yea. I guess what polymer you are molding would influence how you are molding it. You use injection molding right? for the stuff we do in our lab we just mix the stuff up in a cup and pour it but it really depends on what polymer you are molding and what your production scale is too It's prototyping, so it'll be pretty small at first How do you guys get your tooling? Do you submit designs and have it machined? I think so. All of the tools we have were there before I got there but that is what I would assume are you guys using silicone rubber for your gloves or are you using something else? Well that's up to me we have to make a casing to hold a circuit board, and other casing to hold other various things i see So I'm going to investigate what to use But likely something stiff... Like HDPE I'm not really sure about HDPE molding. I dont' know what your part shapes need to be but companies sell HDPE and PE and other polymers in sheets Do you know where I could get more info on machining and molding it? so you may just be able to cut out whatever geometry you need. Depending on what you're doing. um.. yea.. give me a sec Sure, thanks a bunch gina I'll be out for like 15 min okay But whenever you get to it, just type it in 5:30 PM k Take your time too, no rush Efunda ( http://www.efunda.com/materials/polymers/history/polymer_list_thermo.cfm) has lots of information about different polymers. Under specific polymers they have manufacturers and suppliers listed. You may be able to contact those companies about relevant information. If your part geometry is pretty simple I think intially it would be easiest to purchase sheets/discs/rods etc. of your polymer. I've had good luck buying things through McMaster-Carr (www.mcmaster.com). They ship really quickly. I usually get things I order within 1 or 2 days. If you go the HDPE or another thermoplastic route you may be able to buy bulk polymer heat it and bend it into your desired shape. Also, at U of I we have several rapid-prototyping facilities. In the Talbot Composites Manufacturing Lab our FDMs (fused deposition modeling) use ABS and I think polycarbonate. For the FDMs you import a CAD file and it prints your geometry. I'm not sure how much FDM use costs and I'm not sure if you can use it for private research. If you are intereseted I can get you the CML lab manager's info. Also there are rapid prototyping machines in the MIE and GE departments. I am not as familar with their faclities though. 6:40 PM Just got back from bergman's talk I saw a raccoon! I think that was the second (or maybe third) one I've ever seen! Nifty! You are AWESOME gina |
